In a statement issued on the Food Safety Authority of Ireland’s website, Tesco Ireland said they were recalling all batches of three products: Tesco roast garlic and herb butter, roast garlic and herb butter discs in addition to their chilli butter discs.

The retailer said that listeria monocytogenes was detected in the production factory and said that as a result there was a potential that the butters had become contaminated.

Listeria is a bacteria which can be present in foods using raw milk and foods produced from raw milk.

The presence of listeria in foods can cause a serious infection called listeriosis, with pregnant women especially vulnerable to the disease.

Contracting the infection during pregnancy can lead to a number of complications for both mother and baby, with an increased risk of misscarriage.

The statement by Tesco Ireland added that they had issued point-of-sale recall notices and requested that customers who bought the products to return them to a Tesco store or to dispose of them.
